WHAT ARE FREE RADICALS?

Free radicals are molecules produced when your body breaks down food, your body responds to environmental pollution & UV rays, tobacco smoke or as a normal by-product of natural processes in cells. Free-radicals steal electrons from other molecules, because they lack a full complement of them, causing damage to those molecules in the process. They can do damage to cell membranes, DNA and other parts of cells.

 

WHAT ARE ANTIOXIDANTS?

An antioxidant is a term for any compound which can counteract unstable molecules, or free-radicals. Anti-oxidants neutralise free-radicals by sacrificing electrons thereby “switching them off.”  This helps break a chain reaction that can affect other molecules in the cell and other cells in the body. It is important to recognise that the term “antioxidant” reflects a chemical property rather than a specific nutritional property.

According to the Victorian Dept of Health (Better Health Victoria), free radicals have been linked to diseases including heart disease and certain cancers.

So, what can we do to ensure our body has the best chance and our body scavenges and neutralises these free-radicals?

 

 

WHERE DO WE GET ANTIOXIDANTS?

The body gets antioxidants from food consumed. Plant based foods have the best artillery of antioxidants in them with fruits and vegetables most abundant. So a healthy diet is strategy number one combating free radicals or oxidisation.

PHYSICAL EXERCISE AS ANTIOXIDANT

Exercise is also considered a most beneficial factor in a healthy lifestyle, and is able to lower the risk of heart diseases and other health issues by improving antioxidant defences and lowering lipid peroxidation levels.

However, intense and strenuous exercise can create oxidative stress, inflammation and muscle fatigue too.[1]

 

HOW CAN A LIFESTYLE CREATE AN IMBALANCE?

The body, with a diet high in antioxidants can combat free radicals. However, modern life, if full of stresses which, if coupled with alcohol, smoking, lack of exercise, or too much rigorous exercise can result in imbalance or oxidative stress. Oxidative stress is the starting point for the onset of several diseases. It plays a major role in the development of ageing and chronic and degenerative disorders. As oxidisation occurs, so does the ageing process. Accelerate the level of your cells oxidising and ageing accelerates. Accelerate the oxidisation of your cells  and it opens up a range of health issues which are directly related to an imbalance in the antioxidants battle with free radicals.
